John James Wallis arrived in Upper Canada in 1793 from

Norfolk England

He had with him his two sons, John age 18  & William age 15 and his wife Sarah Hyde. This family became the first settlers to make up a newly designed Township and hamlet called Stoneham. Rev. Philip Toosey, who designed the Township, had written to Lower Quebec in 1792 “The persons I shall bring with me will do me credit and by there shall in husbandry will throw quite a new light upon the country in all agriculture matters, I have also some capitals millwrights, wheelwrights capable of constructing....” John Wallis was on the list as one of those people.

‘The Reverend Philip Toosey would have a hard time recognizing the 70 acre hamlet that he named Stoneham in 1792. At that time the Huron River was the only way to the township. The Township of Stoneham & Tewkesbury were erected and considered as one as early as 1796.’

After Settling in Stoneham our

Mr. Wallis after staying a winter moved to Montreal. He wasn't happy without the company of other English speaking people.

He decided to move after he heard of a new English settlement south of Montreal called Roxham by a man named Bowron. He was one of the first settlers. In September of 1796 he is found on Lot 129, concession 9 in Roxham. In 1797 his son John has Lot 128 and son William Lot 127.
